Activities September/October 2023

This summer, our running community has come together for fun, running and supporting the larger community of Winston-Salem.

On July 15, we met at Hanes Park for our quarterly cleanup day, helping to keep the facilities we use for so many activities beautiful.

Beat the Heat 2023 on July 22 may have been, at 81 degrees, one of the cooler runnings of this race in the past decade. This year saw an increase of runners and walkers since 2022, including 67 people running their first 5K and more than four times as many youth 1-mile racers as last year. Nearly $13,000 was raised for our charity partners this year, a 55% increase over 2022. Checks will be presented later in September.

And we brought back the TCTC scavenger hunt this year, with a bit of a twist. On August 20, teams gathered at Incendiary Brewing for a Barkley Marathons–themed Scavenger Hunt throughout the streets of Winston-Salem.

Coming up

October 14: The 1st Annual Marty Hartman’s Race2Independence Roll, Run, Walk 5K, a TCTC affiliate race, will continue the mission begun by Marty Hartman. Marty passed away in November 2022 after completing the first Race2Independence 5K in October 2022 using his own manual wheelchair. After his passing, it was clear that the Race2Indpendence 5K, initiated by Solutions for Independence and Ainsley’s Angels in the Triad, would be continued in Marty’s honor.

Through this year’s 5K, all proceeds from registration, sponsorships, and donations will carry on Marty’s mission to raise awareness of the need for access to adaptive sports for individuals with disabilities. In addition, we will bring awareness to and support a charity close to Marty’s heart, Free Wheelchair Mission.

We have just two more $5K races left for 2023! Join the throng at Jamison Park, at 285 Meadowlark Drive, on September 12 at 6:30 and October 10 at 6:00 to get out for a run on a flat course with a few dozen runners from throughout the city. The race on October 10 will be followed by an award ceremony with some great prizes. For more information and to register, click here.

On the horizon

Keep your eyes peeled for information about hash runs, pacing at the Mistletoe, the TCTC annual holiday party and Hats and Bells on Christmas Eve.

Swamp Rabbit Race 2024

Come out and join fellow TCTC club members for a destination half marathon and 5K. We have created a Twin City Track Club team for the Greenville Half Marathon and 5K, also known as the Swamp Rabbit Race and “the fastest half marathon in the south”!

The Race will be in the fun city of Greenville, South Carolina, on Saturday February 24, 2024. We already have several members committed and signed up to race. Come out and join in on the fun!

And if you need any more reason to sign up consider these three things: It’s FAST, there is a lot of FLAT and DOWNHILL, and it should be nice and COOL! Greenville is less than three hours away from Winston-Salem, which makes for an easy drive, and offers a fun downtown area with plenty of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops.

TCTC members are eligible to receive a $10 discount off the price with a special code. If you would like to sign up and receive the discount code, please email Terry Wilmoth at [email protected]. This race sold out last year and is expected to sell out again this year, so be sure and sign up quickly if you want to avoid higher race costs and being on the waiting list.

For those who sign up, be sure to join the Twin City Track Club team on the website. We will be planning some fun events for the group to join in on while down in Greenville that weekend, so don’t miss out! We hope to see you there!
