The Year of the Trail

With summer officially begun, getting outside is on everyone’s mind. Whether you’re taking an early-morning run through the neighborhood, cooking out with family, catching a baseball game at a local park, chasing waves on the beach or lacing up for a trek up to the Hanging Rock, you’ll find ample opportunity to enjoy the varied outdoor spaces our beautiful state offers.

And this year, North Carolina is embarking on the largest ever statewide celebration of trails and outdoor recreation: the Year of the Trail.

This spring, coinciding with the opening of the Stuart and Emma Thomas Memorial Trail, the Winston-Salem Journal curated a list of great trails nearby. And the Twin City Track Club invites you to explore a couple of local trails in this year’s Fit 4 Race Series, which kicks off with the Hobby Trails to You! race on August 19.

Hobby Trails is the only race in the Fit 4 Race Series that doesn’t take place at Salem Lake. If you’ve never tried out the 5K and 10K races in this little gem of a park, make this the year you do. You can register for this race alone, or save money by running all four races in the series.

The series is again raising money for charity partners the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Winston-Salem and the Winston-Salem Street School, so you are also supporting great organizations that serve our community.

So, what are you waiting for? Find your trail—for a run, a hike, a race—and wander through our state’s beautiful outdoor spaces. The trails are calling.
