40 Years of Mistletoe

December 2 dawned gray and drizzly, but it didn’t stop some 3,000 runners, walkers and supporters from showing up for the 40th running of the Mistletoe.

Twin City Track Club was out in force, with a tent in the vendor area, pacers for the Half Marathon and a team 44 members strong. Of course, the Fighting Pickles of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts blew that number away with 171 pickles joining the Fun Run, the 5K and the Half Marathon. But Crazy Running, owned by TCTC members Donnie and Jessica Cowart, put us all to shame with a team of 664!

The proceeds from the races support several YMCA programs, helping families who can’t afford the YMCA to be able to use the facilities that help promote good fitness. Proceeds also help fund Bright Beginnings, which provides clothing and school supplies for local students in need, and financial scholarships for summer camps and the before and after school programs.

And this year’s event hit another milestone: The Half Marathon was the largest in Winston-Salem history.
