History of a Color Run
The Color Run originated in 2011 as a fun twist on traditional running events, aiming to encourage fun and fitness rather than competition. The vibrant festivals of Holi, the Indian festival of colors, were the inspiration for The Color Run as a way to celebrate health, happiness, and community. The Color Run has grown into a global event; hosting runs in over 50 countries and attracting millions of participants.
Thinking About a Color Run? Read This First.
You’ve seen the photos of smiling faces and clouds of pink, green, yellow, orange and blue. T-shirts turned into tie-dye masterpieces. And now you’re thinking about signing up for a Color Run, but you’re unsure what to expect.
Color Runs are part workout, part party, part art project and 100 percent fun, especially for first-time runners, families and anyone who’d rather sweat while smiling.
But before you hit “Register,” here’s what to know and where to go if you want your run to make a difference.
What Is a Color Run?
A Color Run is a 5K and fun run where you jog, walk or stroll through color zones, areas along the route where volunteers toss colored powder your way. By the time you cross the finish line, you’re a walking rainbow. We like to refer to it as joyful chaos with no pressure. You set the pace. Your only requirement is to show up ready to have fun.
How to Prepare
- Wear a White T-shirt. The powder is best on white fabric, so wear something simple and comfortable.
- Bring the Crew. Color Runs are even better with family and friends of all ages.
- Protect Your Essentials. Wear sunglasses. Ziplock-bag your phone.
- Don’t Fret the Mess. Bring a towel. Cover your car’s seats (or bring a change of clothes and shoes). It’s worth it.
Now, if you’re considering a Color Run this year, here’s one to put at the top of your list: PACU Foundation’s Flying Colors Charity 5K and Fun Run on Saturday, June 21, at Forsyth Country Day School in Lewisville, N.C.
Why this one?
This Color Run isn’t just about the color, the run and the fun. It’s also about community. All proceeds go directly to helping residents overcome financial hardship. So, every step you take helps someone in our area take one step forward, too. Plus, doing good feels even better when covered in colored powder.
The PACU Foundation is dedicated to strengthening communities by supporting financial literacy, education, and emergency assistance. Through charitable giving, PACU has contributed thousands of dollars to organizations that help individuals facing financial hardship. Some of the charities it supports include Bright Blessings, which provides emergency assistance to children, and Help Inc., which offers financial safety resources to victims of domestic violence. PACU also backs initiatives like the Jim Shaw ACE Academy, which promotes STEM education and aviation training for students. Since its formation in 2020, the foundation has gifted over $100,000 to various North Carolina charities
