My husband, Bob, and I have had the opportunity to travel several times this year. Fortunately, we both make it a priority to exercise daily, and we have found that running is a great way to combine exercise and sight-seeing.
Last fall, Bob and I traveled to California. Our hotel, near San Jose, bordered a greenway called the Stevens Creek Trail. We covered several miles seeing Microsoft and Google headquarters and the San Francisco Bay. We added some side streets at the end of our run, and I was surprised to see flour droppings marking a trail through the area. It looks like other clubs are doing Hash Runs too!
A few days later, while in the Napa area, we decided to try a trail run in Skyline Wilderness Park. We ended up doing as much hiking as running because the trail was steep in spots. The view of the San Francisco Bay at the top was worth the effort.
This Spring, Bob and I traveled to Copenhagen and London. Our daughter is studying in Copenhagen this semester and has enjoyed running around a series of man-made “lakes” near her apartment. Bob and I chose the Copenhagen Inner Lakes District route one morning while we were there. We were surrounded by runners and cyclists! I felt like I was participating in a triathlon. The next day we ran through the Kastellet, one of the best preserved fortresses in Denmark, and past the Little Mermaid statue.
While in London, we explored the many paths that criss-cross Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. We would stop occasionally to read the plaque by the statues and fountains we passed. As you may imagine, this area is very popular with runners so we had plenty of company as we enjoyed the beautiful grounds and flowers.
Again, running is a great way to explore new places. If you have a story to share about running during your travels, please share it in the Flyer. You may inspire a fellow TCTC member to explore where you have run.
