I spent some time traipsing around Hanes Park on Saturday, and I wasn’t doing a workout. I was helping pick up trash along with several other TCTC members. TCTC commits to a Clean Up Day four times a year – once a quarter. Liz Handy, a former TCTC Board member, initiated the Hanes Park Clean Up several years ago. Chris Tuohy later formalized an agreement with the city that requires the quarterly commitment. Chris has done an excellent job of coordinating these events and having supplies ready for volunteers.
Cleaning up trash makes you feel good about doing something positive for our community. It is good to see and meet other TCTC members. It is a great activity to do as a family, and your children can earn service hours. Another added benefit to me is seeing the many people who use the park. You see people running track, playing football, frisbee, or soccer. You see people walking dogs and pushing kids in strollers. I even got a thank you from one of those toddlers this time. I actually saw someone fishing in the creek this past week. That was a first! It brings me joy to witness people outside being active.
If you have never participated in a Clean Up, I strongly encourage you to do so. If you ever run on the track or around Hanes Park (which many of us do), it is an opportunity for you to give back to the city.
Finally, I want to say a big thank you to Chris Tuohy for his commitment to this project. Chris – it wouldn’t happen without you!
PS: If you’re not doing anything in particular on April 18, sign up for the next Hanes Park Clean Up!
