President Damani’s September Message

2025 PTI runway run

Momentum. A measure that quantifies something’s motion. This concept comes to mind when I think of the extra breath of energy currently surrounding TCTC. We have been brainstorming how to meet the current moment in ways our members can appreciate. This past week has demonstrated that the fruits of these efforts are beginning to ripen. We’re having more group runs, and seeing new faces at group runs. We’re having more activities, we’re engaging more with membership, and increasing our presence on social media. It really is my privilege to be part of TCTC now, where that energy I mentioned in the June message has not swayed. People are running more, and we’re the right club in the right place at the right time.

Let me share some updates from our very active board. Owen in Membership has been reaching out to new members, making them feel welcomed, and informing them of what all we have to offer. He’s also following up with recent past members just to reach out so they know we’re still thinking about them. Sometimes a light touch goes a long way. Our activities team, Kim, Emily and Molly have been filling our calendar with hash runs, and pre-planning events like the annual Christmas party. Join us for a breakfast run, such as the August 30 breakfast run at Quarry Park. Details have been circulating on our Instagram, Strava and Facebook pages. Speaking of social media, Jack has really embraced this crucial-for-the-time role, and has been increasing our presence and sharing details about all these events. Together these hard-working members have been closing the loop on what this full-service club has to offer.

I’ve been talking to members, old and new, about what keeps us coming back. One theme that keeps recurring is community. While we have tracks and trails, our variety of the ‘third space’ resembles less of a physical location, and more of a series of activities. We have different goals when we show up, but are still here for the same reasons: An accessible way to get out of the house, meet new people, run, learn, exercise and just look out for one another, perhaps finding an accountability buddy along the way.

At last month’s Hobby Trails, it was great to see Race Director Bill, the timers and the volunteers put on the 10th annual Hobby Trails to You! races. This race has a core following, and humid fun was had by all. The overall winner was a visitor from South Africa, proof that running as a third space knows no borders.  The $5k summer series is wrapping up on 9/8, and Race Director Russ Newland has kept the spirit of the popular event strong. I want to thank Russ for his leadership this year as he goes on to different challenges next year. There’s still time and slots available to sign up! Great way to track your 5k progress with a chip-timed race. September also hosts the Salem Lake Trail runs on 9/26. I’m personally taking full advantage of its advertised “fall marathon tune-up” credentials. Although this summer went by quickly, I’m excited for what we have in store this fall. As a member of this running community, let’s keep showing up for ourselves and each other, and driving this momentum. Happy running!
