Making the World a Bit Better … and Cleaner!

A hardy crew found a nice little mountain of trash in Hanes Park at the Feb. 28 Cleanup

Twin City Track Club members enjoy streets and trails and paths and green spaces all over our city. But one space that is especially loved is Hanes Park. It’s the home of the Summer Track Series and the Ultimate Runner. It’s where club members meet to work out and challenge each other.

It’s the home of the track named for club member and founder of the TCTC Flyer, Bob Sosnik.

So we get a chance each quarter to show our appreciation for this park that is a bit of a home for our club by putting on some very old shoes, grabbing some gloves and giving the park a good cleaning.

Over the years, we’ve found some very interesting items: beds and car bumpers, shoes galore. We’ve rescued birds. We’ve mucked around in the creek trying to catch that last bit of flotsam. And along the way, we’ve chatted, laughed and walked away with a sense of accomplishment. And I don’t know about you, but I think seeing the clean park enjoyed by others gives you a good feeling. In our small way, we get to make the world a little better.

Club members just finished the first Hanes Park Cleanup of 2026 on the final day of February. The warm sunshine was very welcome after a month of cold temperatures our Southern city doesn’t often see. And we left the park a little nicer. Not a bad way to spend a day!

Now, don’t you worry if you missed out on this one. You have three more chances to vie for the auspicious honor of bagging the most bizarre piece of trash. Sign up for one or two or all of the remaining Hanes Park Cleanup Days for 2026:

April 18

July 11

October 10

See you at the park!
