As summer temperatures peak, shaded trails offer a refreshing escape from the pavement and a chance to enjoy nature while challenging yourself on a unique course. This year marks the 10th Annual Hobby Trails to You! 5K and 10K Trail Races. This small, end-of-summer trail race, right here in Winston-Salem, is the perfect opportunity to experience the fun and challenge of trail running. Here are a few tips for first-timers:
Follow the Fuchsia!
Keep an eye out for the bright fuchsia “confidence markers” painted on trees throughout the course. They guide you through the trail’s twists and turns. If you haven’t spotted one in a while, you may have wandered off course.
Trail Terrain Can Be Tricky
Trail running is different from road running. Expect roots, rocks, rolling hills, and winding single-track paths. Your pace will likely be slower than usual, and your GPS mileage may not be exact—but that’s all part of the adventure!
When encountering another runner, communicate clearly and give each other space. Stay on the trail to help protect the environment, and remember the old saying: “Leaves of three, let them be!” Avoid stepping into vegetation—for goodness’ snake!
Whether you’re ready to experience your first trail race or are simply looking for a fun outdoor adventure, the 10th Annual Hobby Trails to You! promises a welcoming atmosphere and a memorable race experience.
We hope to see you on the trails August 8, 2026!
